Good interview from a no nonsense person who spoke truths that I relate to!
Amazing player and human being with so many great insights. Glad you enjoyed it!
Cannot open the site ,can anyone give me backing track, very helpful lesson .
Hi, please try the link again. I just tested and all seems ok!
I would love to see you interview another Philadelphian, the great Robert Conti.
Thank YOU!!
You're welcome!
Ottima lezione grazie
Takes 40 minutes of NOT playing the song while also Not listening to the song. Has guitar, does not play much. But you do get an introduction to the basics over a "Dojo background" so...?
Excellent tutorial, the best on how to start jazz improvisation. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful!
you're the best
Thanks!
Been a long-term student of both jazz and classical guitar. The only downside I see is that dividing attention between the two can take longer to build repertoire for each. However, I believe it’s absolutely worth it. The depth of music historically, that’s found in the great classical composers and their transcriptions for guitar is invaluable in becoming a deeper musician no matter what other styles someone might play. The ability to play musically on a nylon string guitar, with a reasonably high action (to achieve dynamics), and enough correct technique worked out to play classical pieces well translates to jazz guitar, especially WRT Fingerstyle chord melody and comping. Then there’s the whole world of traditional bossa nova guitar which has huge implications for both nylon string classical approaches and traditional jazz guitar. I cannot imagine ONLY playing jazz (mostly on steel string archtops in my case) OR classical on nylon string concert instruments. The “tension” between the two has definitely made me a better musician. Thank you so much for taking this on! ❤
Great insight, thanks so much!
Lemon juice with vinegar
I picked up on something you said about the 5 and 7 positions to do with fretboard navigation. Can you explain those. I don’t think I can remember anyone mention them before. Thanks
Hi, thanks for checking out the lesson! Yes, there are multiple ways of organizing the notes into patterns we can easily use to navigate the fretboard. The CAGED system, for example, uses 5 patterns while others, like the 'modal' system and 3 note per string uses 7 patterns.
I can't imagine the great composers from baroque to the modern age composing by sitting at a desk with ink and paper. They surely sat with their instruments and improvised, then transcribed. I believe most Tarrega scores were actually real time improvisations for his students to focus on particular techniques. Great video. Thanks.
I also imagine that was their method if only because they could, unlike say full orchestral scores!
Very interesting! Good classical guitar teacher s do include Harmonic analysis of pieces more now though , if they think the student would be interested, I think a lot classical students just want to play and not be nerding out on chord progressions and suspensions and all that , jazz guitar is for highly motivated individuals
Understanding the harmony is indeed an extra layer to conquer but as I mentioned in the video, one that can add so much to a classical player's abilities. Thanks!
Well said!
A great subject and one that I would say isn't controversial at all. I am a classically trained violinist and my primary focus has always been the classical repertoire. I've also liked jazz for as long as I can remember and I've wanted to play like Stephane Grappelli but never properly focused on it. Recently I started jazz guitar and it has opened up new perspectives including harmonic and rhythmic. Something I would say that could be controversial is that rhythmically jazz is easier than classical. Improvisation is the best form of ear training and in my opinion the best way to connect naturally with your instrument, ie. once developed you don't need to think about intervals before playing them.
"rhythmically jazz is easier than classical." There certainly is a heavier reliance on the 8th note, at least in the classic tradition. More modern players seem to use a wider palette of rhythms.
Some of my favorite classical guitar pieces have an improvisatory quality to them, i.e. fantasias, preludes, impromptus, etc., and I think benefit from taking that freer approach of jazz-playing. The preludes of Villa-Lobos are wonderful "exercises" in exploring the jazzy harmonic capabilities of the guitar in a musical way, and they are such fun to play and allow the player to stretch out a bit. In general, I think qualities of musicianship and musicality cross over styles of play; and there are players and composers who can cross the lines fluidly and fluently -- like Andrew York, Ralph Towner, etc.
Absolutely, great comment. Thanks for watching!
I also started as a classical guitarist many years ago but stopped playing when my kids were born and I lost interest in it to be honest. I took up jazz guitar later and found it helps with improvisation. We used to be taught how to play 'divisions' in my classical days, which were variations based on classical themes by say Carulli, Carcasi, Guiliani etc, but also with early music by Dowland, Cutting and Frescobaldi, which was much more interesting.
For me it wasn't that I lost interest in classical, I just developed a passion for jazz and felt a pull in that direction!

Without a doubt it does, to play jazz you have to have a level of harmonic understanding few purely classical musicians ever reach.
Yes, I found that as well!
thank you so much for the amazing interview I had an amazing time! really looking forward to being back there and maybe even doing a guitar course! super excited 😀
Pritesh! It was fantastic chatting with you on the podcast. Let's get you in to do a workshop soon. Please check your email!
The first cord is using the b7 not 7??
I think you're referring to the Am7, the first chord featured in the video? Yes, that would be a b7!
Great Video. I used to be a metal-head and I am thinking I want to learn some smooth jazz guitar. I am looking for a more suitable guitar- I think I want an acoustic/electric that plays like a well set-up electric, if that makes sense. What model is that Ibanez you're playing? I tend to like wide fretboards so I have more room to cram my fingers in on those tight chords, Thanks!
My assistant instructor Vin is also coming from the rock and metal world. I know he's taking a liking to some of the D'Angelico's As for me, I'm using an Ibanez AKJV90D. Plays like a dream!
Gregory, Good job intro lesson!
Thank you Frank! Good luck with it!
I think this is Great ! just what I was looking for.
Thanks Jay. Glad you found it helpful!
Excellent this album Polarity, This is in my playlist
How did I never connect with Beth? I wasn't affluent living in the Berkley hills, but by time I was 15, I had floated up to live next rock stars in the Mill Valley hills. That's when I traded my 1953 telecaster, my '68 Princeton Reverb, and $125 cash for a Gibson L7 convinced that jazz was going to mesh with all genres and be popular and immortalized.
No need to give lessons…I mean…you’re just a beginner….your far a way to be a Jazz Guitarist…. Play play play…..
Super playing 👍
Thanks Rick! Hope you're giving it a try yourself!
@@FretDojo definately 👍

Nice work! Very useful application of the altered scale (and melodic minor 😊). Very usable! 👍👍👍
Thanks TwangKing. Glad you found this useful!

The great secret of jazz guitar sound: don't change your strings. 😅
That's certainly one way to dull the brightness a bit :)
Hey Greg, this is a huge eye-opener for me! Your explanations and graphics are so clear and easy to understand. I just subscribed to your RUclips channel and I’m sure I will take one of your courses very soon!
Thank you so much!. Glad it was helpful!
Jimmy is so calm and well behaved here !
He's quite the character, as well as an amazing player and genuinely nice guy.
Too much info cramped in a video titled "easy"
Well, easy or hard is always relative. Just take your time and revisit the lesson as often as you need. Also, don't forget you can slow the video down in your player settings if that helps!
As real as they come. A real treasure!
Absolutely. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Very useful
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, what is this for a Ibanez Guitar? which Model
Sorry, don't understand your question!?
@@FretDojo Which Ibanez guitar is that you are playing in the video?
@@deHelli that is an AKJV90D. Sounds and plays great!
@@FretDojo thank you 🙏
Thanks, Great interview !!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Beth is a great player and wonderful person!
Pickups? Height? Action?
Body types?
Well, yes, along with picking techniques but that'll have to be for another video!
I'm so bogged down & bored with playing 12 bar blues & little else that I decided, on the strength of this lesson, to purchase your Beginner Jazz Guitar Course. Here we go.
Congratulations Warren, you'll get a lot out of that one!
I love this method, I would learn this by comparing the 3 major scales with the Major Ionian scale by comparing the mixolydian, Lydian and Ionian scales together then doing the same 3 minor scales the Aeolian, phrigian and Dorian minor comparisons
Yes learning scales and modes in parallel fashion like that really helps you to hear the unique sound of each mode/scale
Hi Greg, I've struggled with understanding scale patterns and have been boxed in with the cage system for years. This explanation makes perfect sense, and I'm practicing it as we speak. Many thanks for creating these videos.
Thank you so much. Glad it was helpful!
Super cool stuff. Pritesh is a fantastic guitar player and an incredible teacher as well! Thank you for this interview.
Glad you enjoyed the interview! Pritesh is truly talented.
wonderful!
Glad you think so!
